HAPPY NATIONAL LIBRARY SHELFIE DAY!
Just for fun, I like to keep up with the National Day Calendar. There are so many arbitrary national days to celebrate. This month we celebrated days such as National Chocolate Cake Day, Winnie the Pooh day, Spouse day, Green Juice Day, and Blueberry Pancake Day, to name a few. I can get on board with any day that celebrates chocolate, Winnie the Pooh, and pancakes!
Apparently, it’s not that hard to declare a national day, just register a day on the National Day Calendar. The calendar was founded by Marlo Anderson in 2013 with the goal of “celebrating every aspect of our diverse culture and history.” Marlo gets thousands of applicants annually. Submissions are reviewed by a committee and they choose about thirty new days a year.
Do you know what national day it is today? It’s National Library Shelfie Day! I definitely can support that! This day is celebrated every fourth Wednesday in January. It’s a day for book lovers to go to their shelf and take a selfie with their favorite book!
So today I want to tell you about the three favorite books on my bookshelf. The first is a vintage copy of Little Women. My mother gave it to me for Christmas when I was 13. It is my most beloved book. Louisa May Alcott’s books influenced me in many ways: be and do good, expect a little romance in life, be sensible and kind, be unique and celebrate your uniqueness in this world. The second favorite book on my shelf is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin. The lesson learned from Jane is “Have a sense of decorum.” The third book on the shelf has an inscription inside written by a young suitor to my mother when she was in college in the 1950’s. She treasured it and wanted me to read it. The Silver Chalace graces my shelf as a remembrance of my mother and a symbol of faith.
As an author, I have had the privilege of being able to place my own books on the shelf of our Lake Jackson public library! Four Anxious Armadillos, a tale of adventure, anxiety, and friendship, sits on the shelf in the juvenile fiction section of the Lake Jackson Library. My historical fiction novel, Come On In, Don’t Get Lonesome, is on the shelf in the Adult Historical Fiction section. Both are waiting for you to come check them out!
What does National Library Shelfie Day mean for you? Well, you can post a picture of yourself on social media with your favorite book on the shelf. Go to your own shelf of books or to the public library and find your favorite book. Share your picture today and tell how the book has made a lasting impression on your life! I look forward to seeing your picture on social media today!
